Develop Self-Soothing Tools

When you’re triggered or overwhelmed, use tools that regulate emotion rather than suppress it.
Grounding: Feel your bare feet, describe your surroundings, breathe deeply.
Music: Play songs that comfort or express what you feel.
Touch: Hold a soft object, wrap yourself in a blanket – physical comfort helps signal safety.
Affirmation cards or mantras: Simple reminders like “I’m safe now” or “I am allowed to rest” can interrupt inherited panic responses.
In my book Faces in the Smoke, 14-year-old Aponia uses grounding techniques, such as her earth dance and a calming stone, to manage anger and distress. Try different methods to see what helps you most.
